What Is AI Search Optimization?
Your customers are starting to skip the search results page. They ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI who to hire, and they get a short list of names instead of ten blue links. AI search optimization (you'll also hear "LLM SEO" or "GEO") is the work of making sure your business is on that short list.
- Customers increasingly ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI who to hire. The answer names two or three businesses, and there is no page two.
- AI systems recommend businesses they can read and verify: plain pages, schema markup, consistent listings, and reviews that corroborate the claims.
- Most of the work overlaps with strong local SEO; the rest is entity consistency, question-shaped content, and monitoring what the assistants say.
- In most metros and trades the AI shortlist is still up for grabs, and early movers become the entrenched answer.
What changed
For twenty years, being found online meant ranking on Google's results page. That still matters, but a second front has opened: AI assistants now answer questions directly. When someone asks "who's a good criminal defense lawyer near me?" the assistant names two or three firms and moves on. There is no page two. You're in the answer or you're absent.
These answers aren't magic. AI systems build them from what they can read and verify about your business: your website, your reviews, your directory listings, how consistently the web describes what you do and where you do it.
How AI systems decide who to recommend
Assistants favor businesses that are easy to understand and easy to trust. In practice that means: a site whose pages plainly state what you do, for whom, and where; structured data (schema markup) that makes those facts machine-readable; consistent name, address, and phone details across the web; reviews that corroborate your claims; and content that genuinely answers the questions your customers ask.
Notice the overlap with classic local SEO. The same signals that win the Google map pack are most of what an AI needs to cite you confidently. AI search optimization isn't a replacement discipline; it's an extension with its own extra work: entity consistency, question-shaped content, and monitoring what the assistants actually say about you.
What the work looks like
A serious AI-search engagement starts with an audit: ask the major assistants the questions your customers ask, and record who they recommend and why. Then close the gaps, restructure pages so each answers a real question plainly, add schema so machines can parse your services and service area, fix inconsistent listings, and build the kind of genuinely useful content assistants like to cite.
Then you measure. AI answers change as models update, so visibility gets checked on a cycle: what do the assistants say this month, and what moved.
Why early movers win
Most local businesses haven't started. That's the opportunity: in most metros and most trades, the AI shortlist is still up for grabs. The businesses that structure themselves for machine readability now become the entrenched answer competitors have to dislodge later, and incumbency in an answer is stickier than incumbency in a ranking.
Common questions
Is AI search optimization different from SEO?
It's an extension, not a replacement. Roughly 70% of the work overlaps with strong local SEO; the rest is entity consistency, question-shaped content, schema depth, and monitoring what assistants actually say about your business.
Do people really hire businesses through ChatGPT?
Increasingly, yes, especially younger and more technical buyers, and it grows every quarter. The practical point: the cost of being early is small, and the cost of being absent compounds.
How do I find out what AI says about my business today?
